Cool Ideas for a Hot Summer

Cool Ideas for a Hot Summer

It’s summer and it’s hot. The air conditioning is cranked, shorts and tank tops have been pulled out and pools are finally open.

Here’s a few things to keep in mind this summer.

1. There is no need to buy sunscreen higher than SPF 30, because it blocks out 97% of UVB rays. No matter the SPF, no sunscreen blocks 100%, so you’ll just be wasting your money.
2. On really hot days run your wrists under cool or cold water for about 30 seconds. This helps cool your blood and cool your body temperature.
3. Turning off unnecessary electronics can help keep the house cool. Electronics give off heat, even when on but not in use.
4. Drink water. It is so easy to become dehydrated during the dog days of summer, so make sure you always have water on hand.
5. Lastly, wear loose fitting and breathable clothing. Avoid cotton and denim, because they can trap the heat.
What do you do to stay cool and enjoy the summer months?

Summer is Hot and so is Vintage!

Summer is Hot and so is Vintage!

Brittany’s Blog

Hello, hello! I know it has been a while since a blog has been posted, but now that I am out of exams and settled into my summer job I hope to post more frequently.

It is summer! Finally the sun is shining and the warm weather has come. Time to pull out those packed away shorts and swimsuits for what will hopefully be a beautiful season.

I recently received an invitation in the mail to a summer wedding for a family friend, so why don’t we talk summer wedding trends.

Vintage has been on the rise for some time now, and I don’t think it will be going anywhere anytime soon. Mismatched dishes, wildflowers and pastel colours are all popular this wedding season. Of course, in the summer outdoor weddings are often preferred, but planning the party in a barn is a popular choice with the vintage look. Wine barrels, lace, earth tones, and wildflowers are all something to look at when planning a vintage themed wedding.

With our recent partnership with Vintage Rentals and the lovely Vicky, I came to the realization that chalkboard signs are highly favoured for both the ceremony and reception. Distressed wood doors with chalkboards replacing the windows or small picture frames on stands with adorable little messages, like “ ‘You can dance!’ Love Wine.” Even chalkboard table numbers are a great addition to a vintage style wedding.

Enjoy your summer and I hope this wedding season holds beautiful weather for all you happy couples.

Vintage Vintage Vintage!

Vintage, harvest, vintage chic, rustic chic, antique…whatever you want to call it, it’s here at McLean Sherwood Event Rental! Our new line of one of a kind furniture pieces, classic looking china and vintage decor items are really taking off. Check out pictures of all the pieces under the VINTAGE category of our RENTALS section.

Picture your guests seated at dark pine harvest tables set with the fine Royal Albert china from years gone by. Or white benches and deck chairs in place for the ceremony under the old oak tree. Wine barrels are used as cruiser tables surrounding the circa 1890’s Saloon Bar. An antique writing desk is used for signing the marriage certificate and the chalkboard doors tell the guests where to sit. Unique items for a unique setting – that’s what vintage is all about!

Valentine's Day - A Romantic Night In

Valentine's Day - A Romantic Night In

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and you haven’t yet planned something special for that special someone. Here’s some great ideas for a romantic night in.

Cook something simple. Spaghetti and meatballs is a great meal and it is so easy to make. A home cooked meal shows that you are willing to take time for this person and you are able to take care of yourself and others. Pick up some bubbly to go with it, light some candles, play some classical music and enjoy a lovely dinner for two.

Make dessert a little indoor picnic. Put a blanket on the ground, toss in a romantic movie and have chocolate fondue or chocolate anything really. Cozy up, maybe light a fire if possible and enjoy a good love story.

Valentine’s Day does not have to require expensive gifts and fancy dinners, what matters most is showing how much you care about another person. A small bouquet of flowers, a little home cooked food and lots of laughter goes a long way when trying to impress.

If you want to make it even more of an experience, let McLean Sherwood do the dishes and wash the linens, all you have to do is pick the colours, and at this time of year, red is always a safe bet.

No date? No problem. Pamper yourself. Take a bath, buy yourself something sweet, watch your favourite movie with your favourite junk food and enjoy a night of rest and relaxation.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Wedding Show Season

It was a thrill to meet all the newly engaged couples at 2 bridal shows we attended this past weekend! Saturday January 16, we were at Horizon’s Banquet Hall in Orangeville for The Wedding Ring Show and Sunday January 17 was The Perfect Wedding Show held at The Mississauga Convention Centre. Attendance was great and it gave couples a fantastic opportunity to view our new line of Vintage Rentals including Harvest Tables, Vintage China, Chalked Signs and Wine Barrels! The miniature tent reception was a big hit and many brides found their colour among the wide assortment of linens. Let us know if you were there and look for more pictures from both shows on our Facebook page!
